Knit & Crochet Bird Nests Needed

San Rafael’s WildCare is asking knitters and crocheters to pick up their sticks and hooks and make some much needed bird nests for their residents. The organization’s current goal is to collect 1,200 woven yarn nests in various sizes (small 3×4″; medium 4×6″; and large 4×7″). They can be knitted, crochet, or felted, and they need to be very tightly woven so that the bird’s tiny legs do not poke through through. As you can see in the video below, the nests are put in small plastic containers and tissue is added as well.

What a great way to help animals in need, and you can use up some yarn scraps as well.

Welcome to the Crafty Princess Diaries, my weblog and site where I get to blab about my passion for crafts, primarily jewelry making, and my crafting career. My name is Tammy Powley, and I decided to call my blog the Crafty Princess Diaries because of this very dorky picture I have of myself and because my husband often refers to me as “the princess and the pea,” which is just another way to say that I tend to be particular sometimes. Along with this weblog, I have a number of jewelry making books published.

  4. WildCare’s 2015 Baby Bird Nest Campaign has begun! Last year you helped us get thousands of nests to improve survival outcomes for orphaned baby birds using our patterns. Not only did we use them, we also shared them with bird rescue groups across the US.

We’re also asking for donations for bird food. Baby birds eat every 45 minutes each day. We work tirelessly to care for these tiny birds until they can be released into the wild. $5 buys 15 meals—enough to feed a baby bird for an entire day!

You can find out more about the campaign at our site: http://www.babybirdnest.org.
    Thank you!
