Listen to a brief audio introduction.
Welcome to my Crafty Princess Diaries weblog where I get to blab about my passion for crafts. My name is Tammy Powley, and I decided to call my blog the Crafty Princess Diaries because of this very dorky picture I have of myself and because my husband often refers to me as “the princess and the pea,” which is just another way to say that I tend to be particular sometimes.
In the real world, I work as a Professor of English. Mainly I teach writing and literature classes. However, for many years, I have also worked as a professional crafter. For about the first eight years, I sold my jewelry through show circuits in central and south Florida as well as small galleries and boutiques. Today, I sell my artwork primarily through special commissions and concentrate more on writing and consulting.
Along with this weblog, I wrote and maintained the About.com Jewelry Making site for 15 years, and I have a number of jewelry making books published.

Note: I often review books and products on this blog. Though now and then I purchase these myself, more often publishers and manufacturers will send me items with a request to review them. Please keep this in mind when reading any of my review.

Hi Tammy,
Are you the Tammy Powley who wrote a dissertation entitled “Memory-Craft: The Role of Domestic Technology in Women’s Journals”? I’m a librarian in California and am trying to track down a copy.
Many thanks!

Hi Patricia,
I’ve passed your request onto some jewelry folks I know. Some other sources might be to check Etsy.com and http://www.jewelrythings.com/, which has a lot of vintage components.

Hi Tammy,
I am a new jewelry designer. It is my passion in life. I enjoy reading your blogs about jewelry and designers. Will you please consider writing about me?
Best regards,

Cindalena – I’m guessing you found a blog I used to write called the Jewelry Weblog; however, I no longer work for Creative Weblogging who runs it. You may want to contact the latest editor over there.

Hiya Tammy!
I’m starting out using metal clays to make small jewellery items and was wondering what clays besides silver PMC3 and Art Clay 650 could be fired using a hot pot kiln.
Are you able to list some cheaper products (bronzes etc) that you have done and how long you’ve left them in the pot for? I’m worried I’ll melt any pieces I make given I have no control on the temperature in the hot pot.
Cheers!
Krystal

As far as I know, no others forms of metal clay can be fired in a hot pot. You would need an actual kiln that has a programmable temperature. That definitely includes metals other than silver because they fire at much higher temperatures than silver.

Hey Tammy, in your essay on The Spruce, you say you use #4 nylon thread for stringing beads. I’m not finding that size designation. Is there another measure for that? Also, any recommendation for a bracelet clasp? Thanks in advance.

Hi Rex: The content on The Spruce is very old and cobbled together by whomever owns that site from the work I did years ago for About dot com, so I have nothing to do with that site or have any idea what exactly you are referencing since I wrote hundreds of articles for About back then. After my relationship with About ended, most of my work from them was chopped and hacked and pasted in various places.
However, I’m guessing the project refers to something like this: http://www.rings-things.com/Products/Silk-and-Nylon-Needle-End-Cord/
Bracelet clasps can be any number of configurations. Toggle and lobster claw usually work well.

Hi Tammy, my teenagers were cleaning out our “secret room” and came across an old doll of mine…it is an original 1972 Blythe doll. Would you or anyone you know be interested in purchasing it? We also located her original clothing!

I might be, depending on condition and cost. There are also tons of Blythe groups on Facebook where you can sell dolls. You can email me at tammypowley @ yahoo dot com for more info.
