Swag with Your Jewelry Sales, Yeah or Nay?

Years ago when I sold metal charms on Ebay, which my husband and I had cast in our casting class, I never included what is now referred to as “swag,” little extra goodies included in the package you send to customers who purchase products from you. Since then, I have heard a lot about swag and how it is a good way to create a loyal customer base. But when does swag cross the line? When does it become an annoyance to the customer rather than a sweet treat?

I’ve been checking out the Etsy forum now and then, and there was an eye opening thread about when swag goes bad: “Do you NOT like to received freebies with your order?” While I have yet to make my first sale there and admittedly haven’t spent the time I know I need to over there, swag was in the back of my mind when and if I make a sale. Since I’m primarily trying to sell supplies over there, I thought maybe a small bag of beads would be an appropriate freebie item to include, such as some hematite stars, which I think are a good Crafty Princess sort of swag item.

Anyway, I was amazed at how many buyers really don’t like swag, or at least the wrong kind of swag. I think that is one interesting aspect of the Etsy forum. You have a mix of both buyers and sellers over there, so you can hear ideas from both sides of the issue.

So, what are your thought as either a buyer or seller? Are freebies a good thing or just extra junk to toss in the circular bin? What is good swag and bad swag?

Welcome to the Crafty Princess Diaries, my weblog and site where I get to blab about my passion for crafts, primarily jewelry making, and my crafting career. My name is Tammy Powley, and I decided to call my blog the Crafty Princess Diaries because of this very dorky picture I have of myself and because my husband often refers to me as β€œthe princess and the pea,” which is just another way to say that I tend to be particular sometimes. Along with this weblog, I have a number of jewelry making books published.

  1. I purchase a bit from Etsy, and I really appreciate the little touches or swag as you call them. Almost everything I have purchased has come with some little extra such as a pin or a potcard or at least a short note. And everything has been very appropriate for the item I purchased. I also appreciate nice packaging. I personally haven’t received anything that I tossed, so I would have to say “swag on”. πŸ™‚

  2. I’m with you Keri. I like the swag, but a lot of people on their forum poo-pooed it.

  3. Hi, Tammy! As a jewelry designer, I have been giving my clients a free “gift with purchase” or “Swag” for a couple years, now. Nobody ever told me to quit or that they didn’t like it. They always tell me “thanks so much” for the goodies and one client said that I rival a Fortune 500 Company. I put together a separate white box with lid, lined with white tissue paper and I place some fancy soaps and skin care products in the box like maybe hand-cream, etc. Sometimes, depending on the season…I will include a set of coasters, or scented candles. I also use Hallmark key chains for decorating the outside with satin ribbon. I really don’t advertise that I do this, and it’s really a treat! The necklace order will come in a brown tote bag with the “swag” box. I guess my Polish grandmother taught me to be “generous” and “giving”. When we were kids and would go to her house, it was like a feast…she would offer cookies, cake, ice-cream, candy, etc. If you went back home hungry, it was nobodies fault but your own! LOL! Now, you know what I think is on it’s way OUT??? True, true SWAG. It’s the luxury items that go to Celebrities for FREE. That’s right, the RICH get RICHER! A lot of these Goody Bag companies want you to PAY them, to give your STUFF away to the stars FREE. Most people all agree that that is not cool.
