Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Bead Ornaments

Finally, our once naked Christmas tree has at least most, though not all, of our ornaments on it. We managed to get a tree last weekend, even though the live Christmas tree pickings this year have been dismal, but then we had to let it rest so it would stretch its branches. Of course, that meant that decorating had to wait until after the weekend, and it was back to the grind for DH and moi. Last night, we popped a cork of beaujolais and got to decorating. I still have most of the house decor-stuff to put out, and just when I was ready to give up last night we found another box full of ornaments, so those will have to wait until this weekend, but the tree is now looking like a real Christmas tree finally!

One of the cool parts of putting up our tree is rediscovering all the cool ornaments we have, many of which have memories tied to them, like a funky one my niece made out of a juice bottle. Yes, she’s in college now, but I still hang it up. It was, at one time, her master piece, so why not? Along with the odd hand-crafted ornaments like this one, I have a lot I have also made over the years. One year I went really wild and made a lot of beaded ornament covers like the one pictured above. They still are one of my favorites because you have so many options with them by just changing out the beads and even the color of ornament underneath it. Plus, they only take about an hour to make, which considering this is done using bead weaving techniques, that’s a blink of an eye!

Welcome to the Crafty Princess Diaries, my weblog and site where I get to blab about my passion for crafts, primarily jewelry making, and my crafting career. My name is Tammy Powley, and I decided to call my blog the Crafty Princess Diaries because of this very dorky picture I have of myself and because my husband often refers to me as “the princess and the pea,” which is just another way to say that I tend to be particular sometimes. Along with this weblog, I have a number of jewelry making books published.

  1. An hour for woven ornament covers? You really mastered it, that’s for sure. My mom and I took the ornament cover beading class on a beading cruise and half way through, I had to go to the bar for refreshments for quite a few of our classmates as well. We had never woven anything before and this seemed like an easy project. That was 2005 I think and mine is still not quite finished up. You have inspired me to get that back out and be brave! 2. The hour is for someone who has made a few, but yes, this particular one is not that time intensive. Some more elaborate ones are. I have a few that I spent a zillion hours on!

  3. this is my favorite way to relax, I have made ove 50 of these last year, do you have any other new paterns, with more detail? I cna`t find any ,
I have made 10 different colors, from pink, blue ,green, silver, gold, plum to mixed. It takes longer if the colors are mixed but they turn out nicely. thnaks…
