Though I have plans to make cat tubbies and send them to animal shelters, so far, there has been a cat line starting in my house for the one I’m making right now. Skimpy (pictured) is at the front of the line and has already test driven the one I’m working on multiple times, and his patience is wearing thin!
Here is where I was at earlier today in the cat tubbie project.
The original instructions don’t tell you how much yarn you need or the finished size. It just says you can make a small, medium, or large sized one. So, I went with a medium sized, though now that I see this materializing, probably small was plenty big enough, especially considering His Highness is only 6 pounds. It didn’t look all that big in the picture included with the instructions, so I figured maybe a regular 5oz skein would do. I had a purple one left over from a previous project and thought between that and some other scraps that would be enough.
Well, let’s just say this tubbie sucks up the yarn like nobody’s bees wax! The sides, which is what I’m working on now, primarily are made up of a stitch called DCL, which from what I’ve figured out is a double crochet link stitch. It’s a pretty thick stitch, and of course, with all the yarn I’ve got around here, I didn’t have enough scraps to finish this up, especially because it looks like it’s turning out pretty well, so I don’t want to use colors that don’t at least look okay together.
You know what came next…a yarn run! Luckily, Michael’s is having a fairly decent (though not stupendous) yarn sale right now. Skimpy is feeling much better with my progress after I spent a good part of today working on it.
I still have a few more DCL rows to go and then some kind of single crochet stitch variations for the last few rows, but after that, his little furry gray be-hind can finally enjoy his tubbie.

Aw that is going to be one happy kitteh. It looks great – and snuggly.

It did turn out nice, though I plan to make another one that is smaller since he’s so tiny. You could fit two of him in this one!
