Frankenstein Meets Amigurumi

I finally finished this amigurumi owl. The pattern is from Crocheted Softies: 18 Adorable Animals from Around the World. This is a big boy, 6 inches wide and about 10 inches tall! As I was connecting all the parts – feet, wings, and especially the head – I started to feel like Dr. Frankenstein. I actually ran out of stuffing and had to go get more because the dude is so big.

I’ve been making so many frogs and monsters for a toy donation drive that I figured I needed to make something a little more snuggly looking. I have a lot of brown and beige cotton yarn in my stash, and this project (Hootie the Owl) is the easiest one in the book. Of course, I had to move up to a bigger box for shipping, and wouldn’t you know it, there is room enough for one more toy. I think I have another one in me before I need to ship these off next week.

Welcome to the Crafty Princess Diaries, my weblog and site where I get to blab about my passion for crafts, primarily jewelry making, and my crafting career. My name is Tammy Powley, and I decided to call my blog the Crafty Princess Diaries because of this very dorky picture I have of myself and because my husband often refers to me as β€œthe princess and the pea,” which is just another way to say that I tend to be particular sometimes. Along with this weblog, I have a number of jewelry making books published.

  1. Can you crochet some fruits and veggies? Those might be a bit easier and inspire good eating by the young ones!

  2. Yes, I’ve made apples and bananas before. That is actually a good idea. Thanks!

  3. That is so stinking cute Tammy! I just made one of those involuntary “awwwwww” sounds πŸ™‚

  4. Thanks Cyndi. It is so big. It did say it was going to be at least 8 inches in the book, but this is the largest amigurumi I’ve ever done. Hopefully, a little child will find it a good snuggle. Oh, and that book has some really cute pattern in it.

  5. I LOVE this guy. He’s adorable.

  6. Thanks Cherie! It will be a little hard to say good-bye to him, but I know he will find a good home.

  7. Darling! This is the easiest one in the book?! Are the beige shapes done separately and then sewn on?

  8. Yes, Eileen, but mainly you make a bunch of circles. It’s all single crochet too, so making all the parts and pieces is pretty easy. Stitching them together, yes, that’s a little more challenging.
