Latest Baby Blanket

I have been making lots of afghan squares lately, but I’m switching gears and going back to baby items while I make this blanket for Heart Felt Angels. This is the Yahoo Crochetlist’s September charity selection, and I decided to be a little ambitious. They are asking for preemie hats and blankets, and I’m guessing since hats are so easy to do, there will be lots of them and not so many blankets.

I’m using a size K hook and TLC Baby Amore yarn in a variegated pattern called “Baby,” which includes all the typical baby colors: pink, blue, green, yellow, and white. I have four skeins which are 4 oz each, so hopefully that’s enough. It’s going to be about 18×18 when I’m done.  I’m just doing a simple double crochet stitch for most of it, and then I hope to trim it in a solid color, maybe soft green, to finish it off.

It’s nothing fancy, but projects like this are perfect when I want to crochet at night in front of the TV and don’t want to have to constantly refer to a pattern, which means using my brain!

PieceWork’s Needlework Contest

In one of the many craft newsletters I receive, I found this information about a needlework related contest. Hearts is a favorite theme of mine for all types of crafts, and ornaments seem like a very do-able project, so of course, it got my creative brain wheels turning:

Each year PieceWork Magazine holds its annual Excellence in Needle Arts Awards contest to showcase the best work of needle crafters from around the country. This year’s theme is “Heart Ornaments.”

PieceWork invites you to send your handmade heart ornaments in these four categories: knitting/crochet, needlework (embroidery, cross-stitch, bead embroidery, needlepoint), lace making/tatting, or quilting. The grand prize winner will receive $500 and each category winner will receive $200 worth of products provided by our generous contest sponsors.

* Entries must be a maximum of 4″ in size.
* Deadline:  April 1, 2010.

The contest winners will be announced and their work displayed at The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA) trade show in June 2010. They will also be featured in our July/August 2010 issue of PieceWork. Complete contest details will be available October 16 at pieceworkmagazine.com.

The heart ornament pictured above was created by Belinda Spiwack.

Counting Labor Day Blessings

I have been battling allergies since Friday, but for the most part, it has been a lazy and enjoyable holiday weekend around here, which means plenty of cat and dog smoochies and thinking about how life, generally speaking, is good. Yesterday, we had a brief period of excitement that really brought that home to my husband and myself.

My husband was outside finishing up mowing the lawn since he had been chased inside the day before due to some major lightening. I was taking a nap and trying to breath through my nose. About 30 minutes later, he came in and told me to call 911. There was an elderly lady wandering around our street. She didn’t speak any English, but from the little bit of Spanish my husband knew, he thought she was lost.

It was pretty hot outside, so he brought her a glass of cold water and got her to sit down on a chair in our garage as I called the police. I went outside and tried to see if she was hungry, but I know zero Spanish, and though my husband asked her in Spanish where her family was, she didn’t understand. After the police came about five minutes later, they told us she has dementia and is well-known to all of them. She was supposed to wear a bracelet with her name and address on it, but she didn’t have it on. However, they knew where she lived and were going to take her home.

What is weird about this whole thing is that my husband would have probably not been out yesterday since he had planned to do the yard work the day before. It still gets pretty hot down here in September, so there was not one other person outside on our street that day. Luckily for her, he was outside. And, it is pretty scary to think about her out there alone. So many things could have happened.

Physically, she seemed to be in fairly decent shape considering she is probably in her 80s. I thought about my own grandmother who is 90, in a nursing home now, and also deals with memory loss and confusion. I’m sure, like my grandmother, this woman was once full of energy and worked hard most of her life.

So yes, I’m pushing 50, could lose about 30 pounds, and have allergies, but I also have a great husband who has a good job, the teaching job of my dreams, and plenty of freelance writing/crafting work to boot. I will try to remember her the next time I get frustrated that I ruined my diet or experience a sneezing fit.

Here’s to wishing all my readers a blessed Labor Day!

Crafters and Blogging

I often try to urge my fellow crafters into the blogosphere. Blogging is a great way to become part of an on-line crafting community, and for those who are interested in promoting themselves as a professional crafter, you really can’t beat the fact that blogs allow you to toot your own horn like no other medium will. Even if you have no professional aspirations, hey, it’s a good way to show someone the latest crocheted bag or piece of jewelry or garment or whatever you have made.

If you need a few more reasons to blog about your hobby or hobbies, this to the point article from Keven Sanders over at problogger.com may help: Hobby Blogs: Making Profits from Your Hobby.

Now, as a side note before you run over there thinking you are going to be making big bucks blogging, like any other business, you’ll need to work at it. I’ve made a little on this blog, but mainly enough to pay for running it. For example, if you know you are going to buy something off Amazon.com, even if you aren’t going to buy the exact item in the ads to the right on this site, if you click on one of the ads and enter that way, I get a small kickback from whatever you purchase. There are other ads on this site too, but you get the idea. If I worked harder at it, I’m sure I could make more money, but I’d rather spend my time crafting, ya know.

Free Sewing Projects from JoAnn’s

I have managed to get a collection of bags together from here and there so that when I go grocery shopping I’m part of the “green team” and usually don’t need to use any plastic bags from the store. All of the bags I use were freebies, which is nice as I’m the frugal type, but I can see a few of my freebie bags probably aren’t going to last that long. This market bag project looks like it may be the answer to my future problem. You can find this a lot of other free sewing projects on the JoAnn’s Fabric and Craft Store web site, and they come as down-loadable pdf files, so you can save them now as use them later.

National Sewing Month!

September is National Sewing Month! I have been so busy with school, I have to admit that I’ve really been neglecting (and missing) my sewing time. I managed to carve out a little during the summer, and it was nice to return to my needles and fabric. When I set up my machine in a semi-permanent spot in my guest room, it was like meeting an old friend. We had been apart for a while, but once I started threading my bobbin, it was amazing how all the memories of past sewing projects came back to me.

Another Yarn Sale Ends

Today is the last day of August and second to last day of another yarn sale over at Crafts Etc. All needlework supplies (yarn, threads, hooks, needles, etc) are 25% off, and if you order totals $25 or more, shipping is free. Because I do a lot of charity crochet work, I love these sales, which they tend to have every few months.

I have to admit that my tastes have gotten a bit beyond acrylic Red Heart Super Saver yarn, but you can’t beat it for making afghans, so I usually use these sales to load up on specific colors of it that I know one group I make squares for uses a lot. At my local craft store, a normal skein of Red Heart goes for $2.59, but on sale, Crafts Etc. has it for $1.94, and that includes both the 5 and 7 ounces skeins.

I also stock up on baby yarn. Though they don’t carry my favorite baby yarn from Bernat, I like the TLC Baby Amore yarn for baby ghans, which they have for $4.12 for a four ounce skein.

I really like natural yarns, so I got some cotton yarn to make some wash clothes. I also splurged this time and picked up some bamboo yarn, which I’ve never worked with before. I have no idea what I’ll make with it, but I’m sure I’ll think of something.
