Show Off Your Rubber Stamp Skills

How many times do you show your work to your family? Like on a daily basis, practically? And, eventually, though they love you, you get the “eye roll,” as in, “Will she ever stop?”

If you are a rubber stamper or mixed-media artist who incorporates stamps into your work, then I have discovered a place where you can show off your skills all day long with other liked-minded rubber stamp lovers: the About.com Rubber Stamp Forum. Kate Pullen, the Guide to the Rubber Stamp site at About.com, is looking stampers of all levels to participate in an on-going forum show and tell.

Each week, she also features a different type of rubber stamp. This week it’s cats. The image (pictured left) is a design she created after she purchased the cat stamp from Stampsmith. Kate colored the image with subtle shades using pencil colors and included a few dots of Ranger Ink‘s Stickles to add a little sparkle to the edges.

So stop by her forum and show off your own amazing designs.

Major Delica Destash Alert

I received an email about a major destash of Delica beads going on, and I thought I’d pass the word along for those beadweavers, especially peyote folks, who may be interested.

Gini, the owner of Carpebeadum.com has had some recent health issues that have forced her to close up her web shop and clear out her inventory. In order to do it as quickly as possible, she has started a blog and organized a ticket program where she will give the entire stash away to the winning ticket number.

Now, I will say the tickets aren’t cheap, $100 each, but she is talking about a huge amount of Delicas (also not cheap), and it might be something a group of beadweavers could go in on together to purchase a ticket. Then if they won, they could split up the stash amongst themselves.

You can find all the details of how this will work, including an FAQ list as well as detailed inventory list on her web site: http://www.carpebeadum.com.

Even though she has figured out a way to destash in one big lump give-a-away, this still seems like a major undertaking, so I wish her the best of luck as well as the hope that she will recover from the health problems she has had to deal with.

Crafting by Hand with Drawings at Ponoko

Here’s a press release from Ponoko about its new option to use drawn images to design finished products:

September 24, 2008
Turn hand drawings into real life things with Ponoko’s Photomake

San Francisco, CA – World leader in product individualization Ponoko has today launched another world first. It’s a service called Photomake. You can use it to turn digital photos of hand drawings into real products simply by uploading them to the Ponoko website.

Ponoko has established itself as a place where you can shop online for one-of-a-kind goods direct from popular and upcoming designers, or design and make them yourself. The company is on a mission to make it super simple for anyone to make anything that is on their mind, at low cost.

Previously at Techcrunch40, Ponoko launched Designmake for designers to make things on demand – over 10,000 have signed up. Earlier this year, they also launched Ponoko ID for shoppers to request goods to be made just for them by these designers. Now with Photomake they’re inviting creative people who don’t know how to use design software to participate simply by sketching what they want on a piece of paper and uploading a photo of it to get it made.

Chief Strategy Officer, Derek Elley says Photomake is child’s play. “It’s great for crafters, makers and artists,” he says. “One of the cool things about Photomake is the quality of the result – it’s truly hand drawn. Because digital making is so very precise every tiny bump in the hand drawn creation is picked up and made for real. This gives a very natural and human feel to the things you make.”

All you need to get started with Photomake is a felt tip pen and piece of paper. Just draw what you want to make, take a photograph of it, upload this digital photo to the Ponoko website (no login required), get an instant online price to turn your drawing into the real thing, then click to make. Your product will be delivered to your door in days.

CEO Dave ten Have says Photomake is made possible by some very clever file conversion technology that is more accurate than anything that has come before it. “It is designed so that what you draw is what is made, without any touching up required in a design software program,” he says. “It is also 100% online, so you don’t need to own a design software program to use it.”

And for those who know how to use Microsoft Paint and popular photo editing software like Photoshop and GIMP, Photomake is the perfect tool to turn creations designed in these programs into real things too. This is because Photomake accepts common jpg, gif and png files.

Elley says that, as with Ponoko’s original Designmake service, designers can use the new service to make cash as well as make things for themselves. “When you make something with Photomake, you can keep it for yourself, give it as a gift or sell it online from your own free Ponoko e-commerce storefront. You can also sell or give away for free your design file templates too.”

So if you’re worried about the cost of Christmas shopping this season, Photomake may be the easiest and most affordable way to give the most personal of gifts – hand drawn and made by you.

If you are the type of designer that likes to draw out designs before creating a proto-type this might be something to think about. You can see a video demo on it at the company’s web site as well.

All Things Resin

I have been enamored with all things resin lately. It really is an amazing material for use in all kinds of crafts and even decorative items like this very cool wall clock I picked up at Bed, Bath, and Beyond this weekend. I couldn’t help myself! Plus, hey, I do save their coupons like crazy.

My own resin experience is slowly growing as I find time to play. So far, as far as semi-successful projects, I’ve got my resin stars, which I loaded up with red, white, and blue glitter, and more recently, I made some fun Halloween cabs using sequin stickers and clear casting epoxy resin.

I love how the basics are pretty easy to pick up, but I have to say that the instant gratification side of me continues to struggles with the curing process, which takes at least 24 hours. Dang it!

More Craft Cruise News

After posting about my friend who was determined to go on a cruise with or without her husband and the fact that I was trying to find a themed cruise for her and ended finding some cool craft cruises, Kristal posted a comment on that post about a theme cruise she’s involved with. Rather than have her information buried in a comment, I thought it deserved a little more notice than that, so here goes:

Hey girls!

Do I have the answer to your cruisin’ prayers!

We are presenting the first Crystal Chix Cruise Nov. 10-15!
Lisa Pavelka, Laura Timmons and myself, Kristal Wick, (all celeb Swarovski designers and teachers) are teaching 5 days of non-stop crystal jewelry classes sponsored by Swarovski.

A bling girl’s paradise!
We leave out of San Diego with stops in Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas.
The goodie bags are worth more than you’ll pay to go on this soirée!
Come alone or bring a friend, it’s all good!

Check out my website for more info:
http://www.KristalWick.com

After getting in Kristal’s site, her information lead me to another, Art Across the Oceans. Along with more information about the Crystal Chix Cruise, it looks like the site has a soon-to-be-announced polymer clay cruise. If you are interested in cruising and crafting, then this site is one to keep an eye on. It looks like it isn’t totally complete yet, but they have a lot of things in the works from what I could tell.

Oh, and my friend? After her husband realized she was seriously planning to go solo, he changed his mind and decided he want to go too. Is that too cute or what?

Adorable Hand-Craft Wristlet

Is this totally adorable or what? And it’s mine….all mine! I purchased it the other day from The Antique Basket Lady’s Etsy shop. I’ve been eye-balling her purses for awhile, and I also follow her on twitter, but I’ve been waiting for the right one. And, finally, this is it.

I have been needing a little something to carry now and then to meetings because I don’t always have pockets in whatever I’m wearing. I try to because I’m a pocket gal, but sometimes jackets or even pants just don’t come with pockets, which sucks. I need to have my chap stick, comb, a pen, my office keys, and sometimes my prescription sun glasses if I’m trooping across campus, but I don’t want to lug my purse around all the time. Enter the “wristlet” to carry by various must have items.

I think this is also a great little holiday gift idea. Her prices for these are normally around $10 (not including shipping which she discounts if you purchase multiple items), so considering the workman ship on these, I think that is a very reasonable price. I have a meeting on Friday, so I’ll have my first test run with it then.

Craft Cruises

A friend of mine is talking about going on a cruise sans the husband who would have to be dragged by the hair on his head. Though she has friends she could go with instead, she is seriously thinking of going alone because she basically wants to do what she wants to do when she wants to do it and thinks she’ll be held back if she has to account to someone else. I got on-line in hopes f finding her some theme cruises to go on, and found Craft Cruises, which looks pretty darn cool:

Cruising with a purpose is all about collecting experiences and making lifelong friends. If you have found yourself resisting cruising then you may want to think again.

Misconceptions about cruising have kept many from trying it. The most satisfied of all Craft Cruise participants are the ones who resisted. The onboard classes, the pampering, the friendships, the overall feeling of togetherness, and the exclusive opportunities to meet other like-minded people in ports around the world have led to expectations being exceeded and the cruise experience being repeated over and over again.

They have cruises available for knitting, crochet, beading, scrapbooking, and one called the Christmas Craft Market, which looks more like a shopping trip than a hands-on craft cruise, but the rest tout classes and lectures on the craft topic of choice. I’m not much of a traveler, but if I were to go on a cruise some day, this is the sort of thing that would appeal to me. Otherwise, I’d be at the buffets stuffing my face all day I have no doubt.

Have you ever been on one of these or a similar cruise? I’m curious to hear about real experiences on one of these.

Craft Bloggers Unite 09/20/08

Where did Friday go? I just didn’t have any blogging energy left last night. Sorry for the later than usual craft bloggers’ post. Yesterday, I started with an 8:30am pod cast at the college’s e-learning center for a little comma movie thing I put together, then it was off to grade papers in my office for a few hours, followed by lunch at home with the puppies and kitties, then physical therapy for the old knee caps, then back up to stuff kitty with kidney problems in the cat carrier, then off the vet for her weekly fluids, then back home to feed dogs, and ended the day with literature draft essays to review. After all of that, I could only think of popping the cork on a bottle of vino!

But, today I’m refreshed and back to blogging, so enjoy the links!
