Giraffe, #11 Amigurumi

Here is addition #11 to the amigurumi charity collection. It is a project from Crocheted Softies: 18 Adorable Animals from Around the World, and the pattern is called Stretch the Giraffe. He turned out pretty good, and it took me (working on him on and off) about 6 days to make. I altered the pattern a tad because it has you using a technique where you have both the yellow and brown yarn going at the same time. I did this same technique when I made my Franken-Raccoon, and it can suck up a fair amount of yarn, which normally would not be an issue. However, I only had a small amount of the brown yarn and wanted to use it up. So I made the entire body in the main color (yellow), and then I made the spots separately and randomly stitched them on.

Check out the cute tail on this guy! I’m very tempted to make another one. I still have a lot of yellow yarn, and I’m sure I have some tan or something similar I could use for the spots. We’ll see. I keep telling myself I am going to make another teddy bear, and then I get distracted because there are so many patterns I haven’t made yet.

Organzing the Handspun

It feels strange to say this, but I now have some handspun yarn. Of course, it is pretty wonky looking. I have yet to produce a skein of yarn that I would knit or crochet with, but I’m hopeful. In fact, I’m back at the spindle again, and I should have another skein finished this weekend. I realized, though, that before I made any more attempts at spinning yarn that I should organize my first attempts and document them so that a year from now when I (hopefully) make something amazing, I can pull these out and see how much progress I have made.

I got some zip lock bags and old business cards. I punched holes in the cards, and added scraps of yarn to create tags. Then I wrote the dates, the attempt (1st skein, 2nd, etc.), and the type of fiber used. I’m going to store this in one of my larger project bags, and I will just keep adding to it as a create my personal homespun yarn stash, yeah!

Free Pattern Friday on Craftsy

I do not know if these are always free or if these are just featured free for a limited time, but Craftsy.com has a blog post called Free Pattern Friday published today. It includes free patterns for all types of crafting from jewelry making, quilting, knitting, and more. I loaded up on some very cute crochet patterns including a few amigurumi ones (of course). But there were also some cute baby shoe patterns I picked up. I have not found “the” perfect baby bootie pattern as yet, so maybe I will give one of these a go some time. Anywho, go check out the freebies.

Stitch Marker Giveaway

March is National Crochet Month, so of course, that means I have to do a crochet-related giveaway. Voila, stitch markers – made by me. The lampwork beads were made by DD Hess, and then I used a few extra beads, some head pins, and lobster claw clasps to turn them into stitch markers.

Though these can also be used for knitting, since it is the month to celebrate crochet, I’m going to ask crochet related questions. This giveaway is available to anyone living in the continental US. To get a chance to win these stitch markers answer one of the questions below in the comments:

If you already crochet, why do you enjoy it? If you do not crochet, what has prevented you from picking up the hook?

Post your comment only once in this blog entry and you will get a chance to win. The deadline for entry is March 31, 2013 midnight ET. Then during the first few days of the next month, I will randomly pick one winner. Make sure to include your email address when commenting. I will email the winner who will have 5 days after the drawing to reply back with a mailing address. Anyone who does not reply after 5 days will no longer be eligible to win, and I will draw a new winner.

10th Amigurumi

Meet Cliff the Brontosaurus. He is number 10 of my slowly growing charity toy collection. Two more to go, and I will meet my goal of a dozen. After that, everything else will be just extra toy goodness. This is a pattern from Freshstitches.com. I’m so-so on how this turned out. Of course, some of this might be due to the yarn I used. It is some of my Red Heart Super Saver that I’m trying to use up. This yarn is great for toys, but it isn’t exactly fun to work with. Not all RHSS are the same. Some are actually pretty okay to work with, but this particular colorway (Turqua) is scratchy and splits easily.

One big boo-boo I did while making this was not following the order of the directions. I’ve made so many amigurumi at this point, that I just jumped right into making the body first. The directions, however, say to make the legs and tail first. Well, there is a reason for this because once you make the bottom part of the body, you need to stitch those on before you start working up the body to create the neck and head. Yes, so I ended up having to work from the other end of the skein because I like to keep knots to a minimum.

The pattern also does not tell you which rows to attach the pieces too (most of her pattern do). Many amigurumi patterns don’t tell you though; it’s just I’ve been spoiled. It was not really hard to figure out where to attach them, but I was afraid I might screw up the tail part because it has to be able to stand up. Luckily, all is well, and Cliff can stand with no problem.

He ended up being about 12 inches high, which is another thing I like about most of Stacey Trock’s patterns. Many of hers are pretty large, so they are actually meant to be hugged and played with by children as apposed to sitting on a shelf just looking cute.

Today Is Why I Live in Florida

Today it is about 70 degrees, and I can feel a little nip in the air because a cold front is coming. While the grass does not grow as fast as it usually does (which my husband is very thankful for), the foliage is still green. It is February in Florida, and it is a beautiful day, a day that epitomizes why I have chosen to live in this state.

I was four years old when my parents relocated to Florida because my father got his dream job as a NASA engineer. That was over 40 years ago. I can’t say that I have traveled widely; I have been around a good portion of the US (especially out West), taken a dip into Canada and Mexico, briefly visited the Bahamas, and spent a week in Jamaica. Except for a Christmas spent in Colorado when I was about 12 and a November 4-H trip to Chicago when I was 14, most of my travels have been during the summer when the weather was warm. So my northern cold weather experience is limited, but the little that I did experience was enough to determine that it was not for me.

I remember one afternoon during the 4-H Chicago trip. I was in the infirmary. I don’t know exactly what was wrong with me other than I had a headache that would not go away, and when I went up to the infirmary to ask for an aspirin, the nurse insisted on taking my temperature and would not let me leave after that. I was stuck in there for a few days. This was about half way into our weak-long trip, so I had already been outside a fair amount as we were ushered from one place to the other. I was shocked at the horribly cold winds and the dead trees everywhere. It seemed the like gloomiest city in the world to me.

On this afternoon, it had started to snow, so the Florida 4-H group was out running around like crazy kids in the snow, as most had never seen it before. I watched them from an upper floor in the infirmary, and my 4-H leader, Mrs. B, had stopped by to check on me. As we both watched them, I asked her, “Why do people live here?” She was originally from the area, so it seemed like she should know. She replied, “Because they don’t know any better.”

This memory emerged today as I was walking around outside. I often post on Facebook about the great weather, and it is taken by some of my FB friends as an “in your face it’s better here than there” comment. However, it really isn’t meant that way (at least most of the time 😉 In fact, one FB peep posted recently how much she loved the snow and did not want someone from the South commenting back to her about how warm it was where he/she was. She hated hot weather, so there!

It is funny how passionate we can feel about where we chose to live.

Another Amigurumi Bird

I have a large bag that I try to keep a good portion of my amigurumi supplies in, mainly yarn of course. I was digging around in it a few days ago and discovered one blue wing from the first blue bird I made. I have no idea why I had one wing. Maybe I was going to make another blue bird, or maybe this wing didn’t match a second wing I had made for the bird and I had to make a third wing.

Rather than frog the wing, I decided to make another bird and re-purpose the wing; however, I used pink for the body, but the wings are both blue. It was fun making another quick amigurumi project, and now I have 9 completed for donating.
