Tough Bunny Love

Ta da! This little gal has been on my hook for awhile, and I finally finished her today! The free pattern is from the Lion Brand site and is called Best Bunny. I made it using Knit Pick’s Cotlin yarn (a DK weight) in the coffee colorway, but it reminds me more of chocolate. I made the tail in a light pink cotton yarn that I had leftover from some other project from long ago. I used a size F hook. The pattern is not too difficult, but just working with something so small was a little tough for me. The finished bunny is 6 inches tall. The original pattern calls for an H hook and Wool-Ease yarn, which I think is worsted weight.

I made her for an Easter swap, figures crossed the recipient will appreciate her. I may make it again, but the next time, I might double the CotlLin yarn or use thicker yarn.

I’m on Fresh Stitches!

I have been making amigurumi from Stacey Torck’s patterns for awhile now. I have taken one of her classes from Craftys.com, signed up for her Design a Monsters class over there, and have been following her blog Fresh Stitches as well. So when she sent out a call for guest bloggers, I knew right away that I wanted to participate. I had a few different topics in mind, but I ended up pitching a topic for how to start a craft club, which she agreed to (yeah!). You can find it published today: Tips for Starting a Craft Club. Thank you, Stacey, for giving me this opportunity!

Attempting a Swap

Craft swaps are a fairly popular activity on the Internet. The idea is that crafters get together and make items for each other and exchange them with one another. I have done one finished object swap before. It was a jewelry making swap many years ago, and I felt it was a bust for me. I am sure my swap partner thought his/her item was wonderful, and it did have some skill involved, but it was not to my taste at all. I never wore it. I know that is kind of sad. Maybe this person spent all kinds of time planning and making the jewelry piece, and I was not able to appreciate the effort. This experience turned me off to the whole swap idea.

Not all swaps are for finished objects, and I have had better luck with those such as Lori Andersen’s Bead Soup Blog Party. Now some of this could be because Lori has very specific parameters for her soup parties. The other jewelry finished object swap I participated in only had one, color.

Given all of that, however, I have decided to give finished object swapping another try because one of the podcasters I watch is running one for Easter, and it just sounds kind of fun. The podcast is Sock Bunny Knit and Fit, and you can find out the details posted on her Ravelry group. Those who want to participate have to contact her with specific details (again see the Ravelry post) by Feb. 21, 2013. Swap packages must be received before Easter, which is March 31, 2013.

Like Lori’s Bead Soup, this has very specific questions for participants to fill out and very specific requirements as well, so I’m hopeful that it will be a fun experience. I have a few ideas to put into my package and have already started surfing around for some cute bunny amigurumi patterns.

Growing Amigurumi Collection

I am still on an amigurumi kick, and my collection for charity is growing. I now have a total of 8 amigurumi for the shelter: 2 birds, 3 teddy bears, 1 dog, 1 pig, and 1 reindeer. Though I will probably make a few more teddy bears, I have Cliff the Brontosaurus on my radar. My goal is to get at least a total of 12 amigurumi finished by the end of the semester and donate these to the shelter when I also bring over the wash cloths that my craft club and Yahoo Crochet List members donate.

Missing My Spindle & Craftsy Sale Alert

My spinning has been on hold going on about two weeks now because I’ve been sick, and I have really missed it. Before this stupid cold came on, I had been spinning in a spare bedroom because, as you can imagine, my cats and dogs would not be that helpful if I tried to do this with them around. I’ve, therefore, kept all my spinning stuff in one room that neither has access to. On top of getting sick, my husband finally insisted that I pull out the extra bed, which goes in that room, because my coughing and snorting has woken him up a few times. The room is not that large, so once the queen size bed is made up in there, I’m barely able to move around.

I am really hoping I find some time this weekend to get back to it, even if I have to find another room, haul my spindle goodies in there, and close the door on my furry helpers. Hopefully, my hands will remember what to do. Two weeks seems like forever!

And, as a side note, Craftys.com – where I originally took an on-line spindling class – has its classes 75% off again. If you have ever thought of giving this a try, for $9.99 (and of course the cost of supplies) I think it is a major deal. If you still aren’t ready to try spinning, I can also suggest the amigurumi classes. In fact, I haven’t gotten through all my Craftys classes yet (the freebie ones included), but from the ones I have completed, I feel comfortable recommending any of them, especially when you can get them for such a great price. The sale ends Sunday 2/17/13. I will probably sign up for a few more. I just have to figure out which ones!

Yes, I Do Make Jewelry Too

I sometimes get asked by readers who find this blog why I don’t write more here about jewelry making, my first serious crafting crush, versus all this fiber stuff you see all the time here. I would guess, even, that if someone came here and didn’t know me previously, he/she might not enough know I make jewelry and even have 8 jewelry books published (and not by vanity presses BTW). So, to those inquisitive minds or those who just don’t know, yes, I actually do still make jewelry. Lately, I have been making Valentine’s Day jewelry.

Not only do I make jewelry regularly, but I write and publish jewelry tutorials, jewelry book reviews, jewelry designer interviews, and other jewelry related articles every week on the About.com Jewelry Making site. It’s my part-time job, and I publish a minimum of 8 articles a month on that site. If you sign up for my free newsletter over there, you will get a weekly notice of any new articles published.

As a result of being paid to write about jewelry over there and being contractually obligated to write a certain number of articles and other required activities to maintain the site, I sort of horde my jewelry text for that site instead of writing it here, which I don’t get paid for doing. Here I play. And, jewelry for me is not really play time like it is with fiber or other crafts. I mean. Maybe it is like playing, but it’s playing with more of a purpose. If I make a bracelet, for example, I have to take photos of each step of the process. If the design doesn’t work out the first time, then I have to rework it, and again, take photos and make notes as I go. I have to document my steps because I need them later for tutorials. I still enjoy the work, which is why I am still doing it after 15 years; however, it’s part of my living versus a hobby.

I wish I could devote more time to all of it, but I also work a demanding full-time job as well. So that’s the reason why you see different crafts here and not so much jewelry.

My Bears Have Faces!

Though I have enjoyed making a number of amigurumi bears from a pattern I received while taking Craftsy.com‘s Woodlands Animals class, I have had the Buddy Bear pattern from the Lion Brand site in my pattern collection for awhile now. He just looked so cute! So I finally made him, but Buddy has had a few issues. The main issue is his face, which the pattern just says to add safety eyes and embroidery the nose and mouth. Humph! I am terrible at embroidery, and I am not using safety eyes for the toys I’m making to donate to the shelter. What the heck was I to do about this dude’s face?

Well, of course, felt was my first idea, so I went ahead and made some eyes out of felt and glued them on, and I was pretty sure I would use felt for the nose and mouth, but alas, of all the zillion pieces of felt I have, none were the right color! My thoughts were that I’d pick some up from the local craft store when I went grocery shopping in a few days…no worries…and so I moved on to make Buddy Bear number 2.

My plans for the craft trip and grocery trip took a turn when I got sick. I even had to cancel one of the classes, which I haven’t done in probably 5 years….I kid you not. Teachers cannot get sick. We just can’t. Or, at least, we can’t get so sick that we can’t drag ourselves into class.

I was home for a few days sleeping and sleeping and sleeping and still had two faceless bears. Then it came to me! I could use a technique from Stacey Trock’s bag of tricks and crochet a snout for them. I finally felt good enough today to crochet again and operate on the Buddy Bears.

I crocheted small circles with a total of 18 stitches and then glued on a brown felt dot to the end after stitching them to the face. I’m very pleased with the results!
