1 Skein Scarf – Take Redo

I showed this same scarf and same yarn recently, and while I liked the pattern, there were a few issues I had with the finished product. First, for some reason it looked like I had missed one row of single crochet on one side of the scarf. No one but me would have probably noticed, but it bugged me. It felt “off.” The other issue I had was that ii was too short. I should have measured it, but I’d say it was about 3 feet long. Now, it is not meant to be long, so this was an issue I had. There’s nothing wrong with the pattern.

I wore it once and felt so-so about it, but considering I paid about $10 for the 1 skein I used and this was a scarf I didn’t see myself wearing much, I decided to go ahead and frog it and make it over again. This time, instead of starting with 121 chain stitches, I made 161 stitches, so this gave me length. It ended up being about 4 1/2 feet long (just right!)

As I frogged the finished scarf, I ended up having a heck of a time getting it all unwoven. Some of this was because I had woven in all of my tails, but I ended up losing some of the yarn. Once I started getting past the half way mark when remaking it, I realized that I may not have enough (yikes!) To play it safe, I ended up making 3 rows (instead of 4) of the crossed double crochet that are sandwiched in the middle of the rows of single crochet. This made it about a half an inch narrower than before.

This is the first time I’ve taken apart an entirely finished crochet project and redid it, and I’m glad I did, even if it meant sacrificing some of the yarn to do it. It is the length that I want and both sides of single crochet are even now. Totally worth it!

Looking Ahead at Summer 2012

Tomorrow I go to commencement, and after that, I’m off for summer 1 semester! While I will be on vacation for a good chunk of time, of course, I have a pretty good size list I hope to accomplish during my break:

  • As far as yarn works in progress, I have a shawl, a pair of fingerless gloves, and a scarf I plan to finish.
  • For projects that I haven’t actually started yet, there are two necklaces I plan to make, which I pretty much have the supplies for, just need to nail down the actual design.
  • Another project not started yet is an afghan for one of my nephews. I got some of the super soft baby blanket yarn that I like so much in a colorway called summer days. He’s not a baby any more, but he loves to snuggle with a soft blanket and play on the computer.
  • Then finally on the yarn list are some toys I plan to make for a donation drive I hope to participate in this summer. I have a fair amount of green yarn in my stash and can use that to make some amigurumi frogs. I also think I can whip up a few little princess crowns.
  • As far as writing, I have a fiction piece I’ve been working on that I am about 3/4 of the way through the first full draft. I want to at least finish the draft, and then it will be time roll up my sleeves and do lots of rewriting on it.
  • My other writing project includes a book proposal on a topic that I have been researching. Until I have something more solid, like a book contract, I don’t want to say too much other than it is not craft related but a little on the academic side.
  • Sprinkle reading and getting lots of exercise in between all of the above.

Summer vacation….here I come!

Bag of Beads Haul

Yesterday’s mail brought me a yummy load of lampwork beads from Dee Dee Hess of DeeDleBeads. She knows that the craft club I sponsor at school likes to make jewelry, and as it happens, we will definitely be making jewelry during the fall semester to sell at the DECA show we participated in last year. So she got a collection of beads for us, many of of them her test beads or seconds, but heck, they look pretty darn good to me. I can just picture these mixed with crystals to make some awesome memory wire bracelets. I know club members are going to love these!

1 Skein Scarf Finished!

The 1 skein scarf I recently started is done. I think the instructions say something like it takes two hours to make. I am not sure how long it took me, but I worked on it on and off during one day and finished it that same day. Generally, I am pleased with how it turned out, but I’m not 100% satisfied so may frog it and remake it. I would like it to be a little longer, and I think I missed a row of stitches somehow.

I did end up getting one cool morning to wear it (which is unusual this time of year in Florida), and so I think there is some hope for this pattern for me to make again. It’s a nice light scarf. It also includes an unusual stitch I have never done before where you sort of make Xs with double crochet. The stitch is called “crossed double crochet” (xdc).

As far as the new yarn experience, I give super wash Merino a thumbs up. It is wool but very soft. Now, the price I’m still grappling with. Originally, this one cake of yarn (50 grams) is $12.50, and I got it on sale for $9.95. I am not sure my experience working with this yarn felt as luxurious as I had hoped considering the cost of the yarn.

1 Skein Scarf

After buying this cake of Merino yarn, my first super wash Merino yarn ever, I have been dying to try to find something to make with it, but as this little dude is only 50 grams, I had to do some searching for patterns. I ended up finding a scarf pattern called Moonlight Serenade, a free pattern by Merri Purdy available on Ravelry.

Normally, I’m not one to have more than 2 or so projects going, but I wanted to play with this yarn and figured it would not take too long to make. I’m not sure if I am a Merino lover like I hear so many other yarn people tend to be, but I will say that it is hard to believe this is wool. It’s really soft!

A Little Crafting Club Recognition

I am thrilled to announce that I received this very cool award at the college’s CCG Banquet last night. Since I do blog here about the craft club that I advise, I figured I would show this off a little. The craft club at school has been around a little over a year now, and while we are a small group, we are very busy. It is nice to feel appreciated!

Saturday Sandwich & Chilling at Home

I had lunch at Panera’s yesterday with a friend, and we were low on bread, so I picked up a tomato and basil loaf there. Boy, this is some heavy-duty bread! We were going to go out to lunch today, but after getting this yummy bread and realizing we have plenty of food to make sandwiches, we decided to just stay home. Here’s my amazing sandwich of vegies and a slice of Swiss cheese, extra pickle on the side.

We also had potatoes, so DH used our microwave chip maker and whipped up some potato chips to go with the sandwiches.

I am trying to get some grading down since the end of the semester is just about here, but otherwise, it hasĀ  ended up being a fairly nice day at home. Here’s Lola chilling in our Papason chair.

WIP – On My Hooks

Believe it or not, I’m only working on two crochet projects right now and both are for me. Yes, I’m on a roll.

I’ve picked up the sock yarn again and started from square one on these fingerless gloves that I frogged a jillion times already. So far so good, or at least I think so. I’m not finding this to be the easiest pattern in the world, but I’m determined to give it one more major shot.

Then there is my second shawl, which was originally my first shawl, but I got so into the ripple shawl project that this one went on the back burner for awhile. This photos is a little old. I’m further along, though it doesn’t feel like it’s by much. All of this is made using half double crochet, so it doesn’t require much brain matter (unlike the gloves above), but it still feels like it is taking forever. I’m even thinking of switching from a bamboo to an aluminum hook to see if it will speed things up a hair.
