Joining Ravellenics

Ravelery.com‘s Ravellenics officially started at the same time as the Olympic’s opening ceremony, but for me it really started yesterday when I cast on another attempt at a knit ribbed scarf. This time, I’m hoping no matter how crappy it turns out, I’m going to just push through and not frog it until I at least get 4 feet of scarf finished, dropped stitches and all.

The way Ravellenics works (which was originally called Ravelympics…you can read the back story about the name change if you don’t know already here) is that members of the Ravelry community celebrate the Olympics and take this time to also take on a challenge. Though instead of an athletic challenge, we take on a personal fiber challenge. For me, knitting is still very challenging, so that’s why I decided to focus on it.

Participants pick teams to be part of, and I picked the Minknits team. There are all kinds of other teams, and I did look around and thought about joining more, but I wanted to keep it simple and doable for me since this is the first time I’ve participated in this annual event. For the Minknits team, the basic goal is just to knit…period.

The summer Olympics lasts for 17 days, but since I started on Sunday, I’m a little behind. Instead of 17 I have 15 days, and now I’m down to 14 days. 14 days and four feet of ribbing!

Free On-Line Crafting Classes

I am sure most of my readers have heard of Craftsy.com. It is a web site for crafters that includes workshops, patterns, crafting supplies, and on-line classes. After my dip back into amigurumi – and because Craftsy.com was having a sale on its on-line craft classes – I decided to sign up for a few. I signed up first for the Design Your Own Monster class taught by Stacey Trock. I watched a little of that, and then there was another sale on classes, so I signed up for the Woodland Animals class too. Both classes normally sell for $19.99 each, but they were on sale for awhile for $14.99. Even though I’ve made a fair number of amigurumi pieces now, I am looking forward to learning some extra tips and techniques in these classes. Then there was a free class offered, which I believe is still free as of this post called, Know Your Wool.

So far I’ve watched a little of each of these classes, and I’m pretty impressed. They are broken up into video segments, so you can watch little bits as you work through the class. For the wool class, you even get to go on a virtual field trip to check out some real sheep. Each class also includes handouts, and for the amigurumi classes, you get patterns as well. Plus there is support offered by the instructors. You just post a question and get a reply. Once you register on the site (which is free) and pay for your classes (prices on that vary), you get access to the class forever, or as long as Craftsy.com is around at least, which I hope is a long, long time!

They have classes in all kinds of craft subjects from cooking to knitting and also jewelry making. For anyone who wants to test out Craftys’s on-line class concept, I recommend one of the free classes it offers right now such as the Know Your Wool, the Short Rows class (for knitting), Modern Buttercream (for cake decorating), and Sewing Machine 911. Also, once you register on the site, you will get notices when classes are on sale, and so far, for both the classes I paid for, I received an offer to purchase a class for $25, just didn’t find one I’m ready to take right now at that price at least. However, the average cost of classes (when not on sale) ranges from $9.99 up to $39.99, so I think most are pretty reasonable even when they are not on sale.

Amigurumi Puppy Finished!

Finally, I finished Paul the puppy. The safety eyes I ordered are still not here, but as it happened, yesterday I had some appointments to go to over in the county south of where I live, which has a JoAnn’s. After I was done with the appointments, I stopped by and got some safety eyes and finished this little guy. I’m okay with how he turned out. Stitching together the limbs is always the toughest part of making an amigurumi. Oh, and here is is tail.

Unfortunately, I don’t have time to snuggle him too much. I’m packing him away with his friends, and I hope to get these mailed out today to Big Hearts & Helping Hands.

More, More, More Craft Podcasts!

It seems like a new craft podcast is popping up just about every day, and I am completely addicted to watching and listening to them. In fact, I have asked my hubby to see about getting me a new car stereo (as a future birthday gift) so that I can download them and listen in the car. I do listen to a few via my ipad when driving, but not all of them are loud enough to do that.

Recently, I updated my blog roll, especially the list of craft podcasts, and I added a bunch of new ones (or at least new to me). Some of these I have had time to watch already, and some I haven’t yet. Hopefully, I will in the next day or so. Now, of course, again many of these are knitting and/or spinning related, but a few cover a few other crafts and topics as well. Still, I’d like to see more diversity in the crafting podcast world, but for now, here’s a list of some of the latest links I’ve added:

3 Stitches

Delusional Knitter

Dramatic Knits

High Fiber Diet

Knit Me Happy

Knit Nerd

Knit Psychos

Knit 1 Heart Too

Knitting on the Fly

Knitting Blooms

Knittynatter

My Ordinary Journey

Noteable Needlework

Purple Photo Kitty

Rain Lover Knits

Single Handed Knits

The Fiberista Files

Willow Fairy Knits

Wolfe Farms

I told you there were a bunch of them! And these are just some new ones I’ve added to the blog roll the other day. Feel free to continue my addiction by suggesting a crafting podcast to add to my list.

Craft Wars’ New Time & New Show!

Tomorrow will be the best Craft Wars on TLC ever for a number of reasons. First, it is starring the Impatient Crafter herself, Margot Potter!

And reason number two is that Craft Wars is now on at a different time, 8pm eastern time/7pm central time. That means prime time for the east coast, yeah!

I can’t wait to watch Margot in action as she and two other competitors take on Christmas crafting. Here is some of the 411 from the press release I received:

This week Christmas comes early on TLC’s CRAFT WARS! Contestants Cheryl, Ivan and Margot compete in a series of challenges filled with Christmas cheer; they must create a Christmas tree out of post office supplies. I’ve included the episode for you to preview as well as a sneak peek and photos from tomorrow’s episode. PLEASE NOTE: TLC has moved the time of CRAFT WARS- it’s now airing Tuesday nights at 8/7c.

Also, don’t miss Tori Spelling giving TLC’s CRAFT WARS fans the behind-the-scenes scoop when her tweets appear live on-air during Tuesday’s episode. Tune in to see what she really thought of the crafty creations Tuesday, July 31 at 8/7c on TLC.

And even better, here is a video sneak peek:

Amigurumi Going to the Dogs Now

Here is the start of my latest amigurumi creation, Paula Puppy, or this might look more like Paul Puppy when I’m done since he will be wearing a blue and white t-shirt instead of the more pink colored one from the original pattern over at Lion Brand. I am hoping I can get this done this weekend and get him mailed out with his other amigurumi friends early next week. Unfortunately, I have no more safety eyes, and my local Michael’s no longer carries them, so I had to order some on-line. Fingers crossed they show up today or tomorrow because I can’t stuff him until I get those boogers.

Again, I’m using yarn from my stash, Sugar and Cream in Denim (the blue/white yarn) and Terra Firma (the brown yarn). So far, the pattern is really easy, as most amigurumi toy pattern tend to be, lots of single crochet pretty much and counting.

Frankenstein Meets Amigurumi

I finally finished this amigurumi owl. The pattern is from Crocheted Softies: 18 Adorable Animals from Around the World. This is a big boy, 6 inches wide and about 10 inches tall! As I was connecting all the parts – feet, wings, and especially the head – I started to feel like Dr. Frankenstein. I actually ran out of stuffing and had to go get more because the dude is so big.

I’ve been making so many frogs and monsters for a toy donation drive that I figured I needed to make something a little more snuggly looking. I have a lot of brown and beige cotton yarn in my stash, and this project (Hootie the Owl) is the easiest one in the book. Of course, I had to move up to a bigger box for shipping, and wouldn’t you know it, there is room enough for one more toy. I think I have another one in me before I need to ship these off next week.
